It Happened in the Seventies - Book by Dieter Luske
Canberra, Autumn
We arrived at Tino’s brother Silvio's home at around 8 p.m.; no one was home, and by now, it was freezing. We parked in the driveway and treated ourselves to a couple of glasses from a bottle of sherry. While we were waiting, we may have had a few too many, and we went blissfully to sleep.
A loud knocking on the car door woke us up; it was Silvio! He invited us in for breakfast and to freshen up. In an instant, we found ourselves in Little Italy. The family had stayed at Silvio’s other brother’s house overnight, and now everyone had come back with him. Italian, German, and broken English conversations were flying about. I have no idea exactly how, but we understood each other perfectly. Mind you, the parents-in-law spoke no English at all.
Silvio and his wife had given us a list of landmarks to see while in Canberra. Old Parliament House topped the list, which in 1975 was known simply as ‘Parliament House.’
We left after breakfast, map in hand, and tried to make sense of the city’s numerous roundabouts. 'Going round in circles' is more than a figure of speech in Canberra. So confused were we that we drove in the wrong direction at one point. No harm done, a bit of beeping and lights flashing, and we realised our mistake and managed to turn around.
Parliament House is a grand old building and we took way too many photos. Among other landmarks we visited were the Australian War Memorial, one or two galleries and some churches. We even looked at the German Embassy which resembled a 1950s-style government building, sterile German architecture. It may have been the first time we became aware of something looking distinctively German and somehow out of place.
In the afternoon, we came across a vast grassy space crowded with people looking at hot-air balloons of all shapes and sizes. It was quite a spectacle for us, never having been close to one such balloon, let alone fifty. Carloads of spectators were parked around this oval which was called a showground, something we didn’t have in Germany.
We made it back in time for dinner; afterwards they took us to the movies.
It was an all-Italian cinema and an original black and white Italian film. Even though we didn’t understand the dialogue, we easily followed the plot.
The cinema experience was more fun than the movie; it was a real family affair. Everyone was present, babies, young adults, parents and grandparents, all Italian. There was laughing, clapping and whistling. An experienced we treasured forver. It was way after midnight when we went to bed.
